EDITORS NOTE:

There was too much information for one Ultimate Happenings
post so I split it up into two messages. The other one contains
Nationals information and this one contains non-Nationals
information (other then the request for volunteers below).

LOOKING FOR NATIONALS VOLUNTEERS:

Hey all,

Well, nationals is a mere 5 days away, and things are really
starting to take shape. As we enter into the final week,
however, it's apparent that what we need more than anything
is bodies. We need more volunteers to handle things like setup,
parking, scorekeeping, water distribution, garbage collection,
merchandise sales, reporting, computing, cleanup, you name it.
We've done a lot of work to make sure that this is the best
nationals ever for both the players and the spectators, but
we need support from the OCUA community to make it happen.

As such, I'm making a personal appeal to all of you to please
consider volunteering some time, and to pass this message on
to your teammates and encourage them to do the same. You don't
have to help for the entire 6 days (4 days of play + 1 day
setup + 1 day cleanup) - even if you only take a shift or two,
it will help us out immensely. There is a volunteer form that
you can fill in on the nationals web page (www.ocua.ca/nationals),
which allows you to indicate the times that you are available,
and the areas that you would be most interested in helping in.

So, what does volunteering get you, you ask, aside from a deep
sense of satisfaction for helping stage Canada's premiere
Ultimate event? :) Plenty, especially if you're planning to
come out and watch anyway. Basically, you receive the same
benefits as a player - free dinner on Thursday and Friday,
and free admission to the party Saturday night, which will be
absolutely rocking. Plus, every volunteer receives a free
Canadian Nationals volunteer t-shirt.

Now I realize that a lot of you will actually be playing at
nationals, and if you are, please be assured that I don't
really expect you to help, unless you can help out with setup
on Wednesday or cleanup on Monday. Your #1 priority at Nationals
will be your team, and so it should be. But once again, I do
strongly urge you to help out by forwarding this on to players
on your league teams, and encouraging them to be a part of
what will surely be a fantastic event.

Finally, even if you or your friends can't help out, please
encourage them to come out and watch. There will be a lot of
media exposure at this event, and a lot of people in the
community will be watching what happens at this even as well.
We need fans to help make this a premier event, and show the
people in the community that Ultimate is for real. The bigger
and better this event is, the better it will be for Ultimate
in Ottawa.

Thanks for your support,

Ken Lange

------------

For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, the
UPA is the Ultimate Players Association. It is the ruling body
for Ultimate in the United States, and it has recently expanded
to allow Canadian teams to compete in its Fall Championship
Series.

The fall series includes a Sectional, Regional, and National
tournament. The top teams at Sectionals advance to Regionals,
from which the top two advance to Nationals. This is only the
second year that Coed has been included in the fall series,
and the Sectional Championships for our area, includes all of
New York State (except for metro New York City) and Ontario,
will be held in Hamilton on September 25-26th, 1999.

Regionals will be held on October 2-3 (location yet to be
determined), and Nationals are on October 28-31 at the Rancho
Santa Fe Polo Fields in San Diego, CA!!

If you wish to enter this tournament please reply to
ssphillips@bigfoot.com or call me at 905-545-7403. I need your
team name and contact information including email, phone number,
and mailing address. Also include a brief bio and a description
of your team strength for seeding purposes.

Notes:
1) The roster for each team is frozen after sectionals (ie.
only those players that compete for one team at sectionals
may compete for that team at Regionals or Nationals.
2) All players that compete at Sectionals MUST be UPA members.
You may join the UPA on the day of the tournament. Fees are
   $US 10 for students or $US 25 for non-students for a one
year membership. Membership gets you several newsletters
per year plus many other benefits (see
   http://www.upa.org/upa/upa-intro.html for more info).
3) You may only compete in one division in the fall series
(ie. you must choose between open/women's or coed).
4) The gender default rule is "No more than 4 of either gender
on the field - offense picks the balance." This default is
required in all Nationals games and in Sectional/Regional
semi-finals and finals. Teams unable to field 4 of either
gender at any time may continue to play with fewer players
   than their opponent.

DID YOU KNOW?:

Ever complained that one of your teammates throws to hard?
You might want to think again.... The world record for speed
of a disc that was caught is 119.14 km/h in a game of Guts
played August 25th 1980. They were only 14m apart and it was
caught with one hand!

Ever get bored of tossing the disc waiting for a game to start?
Not a pair of players in San Marino California. They set the
24hr pairs distance at 592.15 km in 1993.

Don't think the players in cup should be pulling because they
won't have enough time to get to the disc? Some people can!
The records for Throw, Run and Catch are 92.64m for men and
60.02m for women.

and check it out!

Sansom at 565-3018.

Lost a men's wedding band at SOD 14 Tuesday August 10. It
would be around the middle of the inner sideline (along the
shallow ditch).

Obviously great sentimental value. If anyone comes upon it
please contact Allen at atough@magma.com. Thanks.

Thanks,
Brad
