ONLINE SYSTEM FEEDBACK

Well, we're almost halfway through the season, and after some
initial bugs, the online system handling schedules, results
and standings seems to be working well. We continue to add
more functionality, but the basics of the system are now
intact. You can look up your teammates emails and phone
numbers, check the rosters of your competition, check your
schedule, submit your scores, and look at results/standings
from all the divisions. We're pretty happy with the way it
works, but we'd certainly like some feedback from our
members. Let us know what you think of it, and what you
think we could do better/differently. Send your comments to
webmaster@ocua.ca.

SCORE SUBMISSION

As well as the system seems to be working, it is only as good
as the individuals using it. While not everyone is concerned
with results/standings, lots of people do find that sort of
data interesting. In addition, the data is necessary to
ensure smooth functioning of the league. Because scores are
not considered to be official until both teams have submitted
them, it is CRUCIAL that teams PROMPTLY submit their scores
and spirit ratings into the system. It only takes a few
minutes to do, so it shouldn't be a problem. Teams are
expected to submit their scores within 48 hours of the game.
Players, if your captain/assistant aren't being prompt about
entering your scores, encourage them to do so. Entering
scores is their responsibility, but it is also the
responsibility of the team in general.

What about the situation where you've entered your score, but
the result is still not showing in the standings?
Captains/assistants, you can go check the schedule for the
other team. If the entry in the score column for that game
is blank, then they haven't submitted it yet - if it's past
48 hours, feel free to email them a reminder. On the other
hand, if it says "Entered", then both teams have submitted
their scores, but the results disagree. (a simple way to
avoid this problem is to make sure you confirm the score with
the opposing captain at the end of the game) In this case,
the score will not be official until it is approved by your
divisional coordinator. It is their responsibility to check
for these problems, so if you are having problems with your
coordinator consistently not addressing these issues, again,
feel free to send them an email reminder. We're all getting
used to this new way of doing things, but if we get into the
habit, it should be a breeze.

So, in a nutshell, be responsible and submit your scores
within 48 hours. If you do this and the coordinators quickly
address mismatched scores, we should have accurate up to date
results and standings within 48 hours of the game. That's
pretty sweet if you ask me.

Thanks!

NATIONALS 2002

OCUA would like to make a bid for the 2002 Canadian National
Ultimate Championships. While we realize that nationals were
here just 3 short years ago, we feel that we are in the best
position to host this event. Currently, nationals are held in
a western location for 2 years, and then in an eastern
location for 2 years. 1998 was Montreal, 1999 Ottawa, 2000
Vancouver, and this year nationals are in Edmonton. That
means they are due to come back east, and while it would be
unusual for nationals to return directly to the same eastern
city, we think that we are the front runners. Why? Well,
rumour has it that Montreal are not interested at this time,
and we all know that Toronto has some significant field
space/cost issues. In addition, Ottawa is close to both of
these cities, and we have a first class facility, so many of
the players in those cities have suggested they would simply
prefer to come here.

Why not wait until 2003? That was our initial thought.
However, it is likely that the system for allocating
nationals will change, as the current system came into place
to alleviate a bias with respect to worlds, and the changes
to the worlds format have caused that bias to return (the
nationals at which the teams qualify for worlds were always
being held in the same geographical region). In addition, we
feel that we are now better positioned to take advantage of
the significant benefits that come with hosting a nationals
than we were in 1999. That is really the key - we feel that
a extremely well run nationals could significantly raise
awareness of our sport within the city, and substantially
strengthen our position with the local government. This will
hopefully translate into better access to in city fields, and
consideration when building future parks and athletic
facilities. This is key to the continued growth of our
organization, as increased development will continue to put
pressure on the sod farm, which will put our use of that site
and it's 16 fields in danger. You may have noticed that a
piece of land just to the north of sod has been parceled into
estate lots - that is certainly a portent of what is to come.

So, what does all this mean? Well, we know from experience
that running nationals is A LOT of work. With approximately
800 players on site for 4 days, it's a big event. It takes a
strong team of volunteers, and a great degree of
organization. We already know that we have a lot of
volunteers interested in helping out. But what we need more
than anything at this point is that organization. Therefore,
what we're looking for is someone to take up the charge as a
Nationals 2002 Event Coordinator. This person would spearhead
the effort to make this event a success. In the short term,
our goal is to determine the feasibility of hosting the
event, and then lay the initial groundwork in order to
produce and present a quality bid at the Edmonton Nationals,
August 16-19. This only gives us a couple of months, but
we're confident that we have the experience here to make that
happen. Once we win the bid, then we can start nailing down
the details.

Pretty exciting? We think so! So are you interested? The
person we're looking for should be reasonably organized, and
be able to work well with people, as their primary task will
be coordinating the various volunteer efforts. They should
also be enthusiastic, as it's a long road to August 2002, and
we need to keep up momentum. Sounds cool, but you think it'd
be too much for you to handle on your own? We're flexible,
maybe you and a couple of friends would like to do it as a
team. We're open to ideas. If you are interested in the
position, or in helping out with the Nationals bid in
general, please contact us. It will be an incredible
experience, and your efforts will help solidify the future of
Ottawa ultimate!

Cheers!

OCUA EMPLOYEE

Several months ago, we advertised that we were looking to
hire a contractor to help with the running of OCUA. After an
initial lack of response, we received two excellent proposals
from members of our league. Having evaluated those proposals,
I'm pleased to announce that we have signed Nick Roberts to a
6 month contract position. We felt that Nick's past volunteer
experience with OCUA combined with his understanding of the
workings of the board made him the best candidate for this
initial trial. Nick will be helping to facilitate the general
operation/administration of the organization, and he reports
to the existing board of directors. He will be operating out
of his home for the length of the term, from June 15 to
December 15, 2001. We opted for a six month term in order to
allow us to evaluate the nature and feasibility of the
position. As we near the end of the term, we will look at how
well things have worked, and determine how we should proceed.

Cheers!
