LIGHT RAIL - 2 PUBLIC EVENTS

Tuesday June 4th, 2002

Note to OCUA staff, players and fans - you should attend
these events because:
- You support alternative transportation solutions like
light rail (and you don't support cars)
- Light rail connections are being proposed to connect you
  to Manotick where you play
- An alternative use for the Alta Vista Corridor could be
  more ultimate fields

To celebrate the growing demand for healthy solutions to
transportation issues in Ottawa, Citizens for Healthy
Communities has organized:

*** Rally for Light Rail on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 from 12:00
Noon to 2:00 PM at Festival Plaza, Ottawa City Hall, 110
Laurier Avenue West

The noon-hour rally will feature musical entertainment by
the Canterbury and Glebe high school bands, blues singer
Maria Hawkins, rock band Lister, a guest appearance from the
Raging Grannies and some brief comments from local
politicians.

*** Public Meeting on Tuesday, June 4th at 7 pm at Saint
Paul University, 223 Main Street to present a community-
favoured solution for the Alta Vista Corridor,

The evening program will feature John Sewell, former Mayor
of Toronto and former head of the Ontario Commission on
Planning and Development. His address is entitled, "Ottawa,
City of Corridors". He will be sharing the stage with
Pierre Johnson (President, Ottawa East Community
Association) presenting the possible impacts of a roadway
solution in the Alta Vista Corridor; Tim Sookocheff
(Citizens for Healthy Communities), describing the myths
about roads and rail; and David Jeanes (President, Transport
2000), describing a light rail solution for the Alta Vista
Corridor. Jon Legg (Action Sandy Hill) will facilitate the
evening's program, including a question and answer period at
the end of the evening.

CHEO CARDIAC SURGERY UNIT

------------------------------------------------------------
While OCUA doesn't normally do this, we have agreed to send
the following request to our UH members because it comes
from long time member of our family, and goes right to the
'heart' of our community. If you feel this is important,
please take the time to sign the petition; if not just
ignore. Thank you, Nick Roberts, OCUA GM.
------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

Recent news about the closure of CHEO's cardiac surgery unit
has hit very close to home and we are asking for your
support in helping to get this decision reversed.

In 1992, our eldest daughter (Gillian) was born with a heart
defect. At 4 months of age and a whooping 9 pounds, she
underwent open heart surgery at CHEO.

The whole experience was a little overwhelming for all of
us... However, we will be eternally grateful for the
excellent care she received from the entire surgical staff.
I must admit we took it for granted that the surgery could
be done in Ottawa. I cannot imagine the extra stress that
would have come from having to go to Toronto for the
procedure, not to mention the added risks to Gillian that
may have resulted.

Please join us in supporting the cause of keeping the
cardiac surgery unit at CHEO alive by signing the electronic
petition at:

http://www.strata.ca/hearts/petition.html

Thanks
Mo & Tim Brown

ps: for those who don't know, Gillian is 100% perfectly
healthy today, playing in the Junior Ultimate program, and
having a completely NORMAL kid's life...
