CITY OF OTTAWA SPORTS FIELD STRATEGY

A couple of weeks ago the City of Ottawa held a public
session to get final feedback on its draft Sports Field
Strategy. Nick and I were there, and were pleased to see
three or four other members show their interest/support by
attending - thanks guys! (it's been a while, but I know Dave
O'Neill, Vance Strickland and Mike Hasson were there... who
did I miss?)

At any rate, the session consisted of an hour long
presentation with a question and answer period. In general,
I think most people in attendance (ultimate and otherwise)
were disappointed that a) we only received a brief summary
of the report, and b) we once again only received it as a
handout at the meeting, rather than in advance. I have
placed a copy of the summary report here for everyone to
have a look at:

http://www.ocua.ca/misc/sports_field_strategy_draft_summary.doc

We have some rather serious concerns about what is contained
within this document. Our primary issue is the continued
inequity of what is being proposed. If you look at the
numbers, you'll see that while ultimate is at least
recognized now, they are still proposing that we receive
proportionately less than our fair share of fields.
Furthermore, the 21 fields that they are recommending for
the next 2 or 3 years INCLUDE the 16 to replace sod farm -
fields that we already have, that the city is forcing us to
give up. All this is particularly distressing in that the
time frame for this strategy is up to 2021. In 18 years,
they are proposing the need for 10 ultimate fields (26 if
you include the sod replacements), while they are proposing
214 for soccer. This is in addition to the already
imbalanced distribution of facilities (there are currently
approx. 425 soccer fields in the city!)

As a result, we have sent a strongly worded letter
expressing our displeasure with this report, and copied the
chair of the Parks and Rec Advisory Committee (the report's
next destination), the chair of the Health, Recreation and
Social Services Committee (it's next stop after that), and
the mayor.

We will keep you posted as to further developments, and
where and when you may be able to help out the cause.

Cheers!

Ken Lange

WEST NILE VIRUS

A number of members have contacted us with concerns
regarding West Nile Virus, given the mosquito populations at
UPI and the Sod Farm. Most are asking if we intend to spray
or take other preventative measures.

The Board has discussed this informally, and we are
generally agreed that at this time we don't intend to
undertake any sort of spraying program. Our reasoning is as
follows:

1) We don't believe it is really within our purview. If the
city decides that mosquito control is necessary, it will
undertake it, or will instruct private interests on how to
best carry it out. It should also be noted that the city has
yet to undertake any spraying programs of its own to date.

2) We have serious concerns about the environmental impacts
of widespread pesticide application, both in terms of it's
direct effects on other organisms, and indirect effects
caused by the reduction of mosquito populations within the
ecosystem.

3) We question the effectiveness of spraying. As we all
know, mosquitos are persistant, and not the easiest things
in the world to get rid of.

We are aware, however, that there are significant mosquito
populations at the aforementioned sites at certain times of
the year, and therefore strongly suggest that members make
themselves aware of the risks, and follow the proper
precautions in order to reduce their exposure. Information
can be found at the following City of Ottawa site:

http://ottawa.ca/city_services/yourhealth/environmental/west
nile_en.shtml

Please make every effort to educate yourself and take
whatever precautions you deem necessary. We will continue to
monitor the situation, and keep you notified of further
developments.

Thanks,

Ken Lange

A watch was lost at the SOD farm on Friday May 23rd. We were
playing on field 4. If anyone happened to see a watch or
picked one up please email me at tim_warnes@hotmail.com.
This watch has a great deal of sentimental value, it's a
silver women's watch. Thanks, Tim

... AND FOUND

Thank you to Shannon who found the watch and called to let
me know she had it. I had already known that I was hanging
out with a great group of people, and this totally confirmed
it! Thanks again Shannon! Jody & Tim
