Division Status:

Ok, another summer is about to start and you are trying to
decide where and when you want to play. You may wish to put
a new team in the league but have no idea who to call. Well
lets try to figure that out.

We had a co-ordinators meeting last night and one of the
things we determined is that with our current field situation
we have to cap the number of teams that can play each night
to 72, i.e.. 36 fields.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we offer either 5/2 or
4/3 Ultimate at varying skill levels. For contacts for the
co-ordinators for each night see the contact list elsewhere
in this post.

Currently Monday night looks to be pretty full. It had
almost around 65 teams in it last year and has room for
only a few more this year.

Wednesday night is very full as well. I think there is
room for maybe 8 to 10 teams.

Tuesday night has a little more room. We have 32 teams in
Glenda's 4/3 league and I think she wants to cap her league
there. We had 8 teams in the 5/2 league but some are leaving
and a few others might start. Nick Roberts also would like
to start a masters league that night. This night has room
to grow either in my 5/2 league or Nick's masters league.
(For an idea of what Nick is trying to start see his
article elsewhere in this post).

Thursday night has always been an odd ultimate night.
We have the women's league (which just keeps on growing)
that limits the size of any co-ed league also trying to
exist on that night. Fadi Ayoub is trying to start a
competitive league that plays every second week (see
his article elsewhere in this post).

Looking at the above situation we have the following
growth potential.
- A little on Monday or Wednesday.
- Women's league or competitive league growth on Thursday.
- Room for some teams in either the masters league or
  the 5/2 league on Tuesday.

Therefore if someone wants to put in a new Ultimate team
they should realise the above and contact the appropriate
league co-ordinator as soon as possible.

New teams join on a first come - first serve basis so
contact your co-ordinator early.

Please remember that our limiting factor for growth is
fields to play on. If we had more fields we could support
more teams. With that in mind we encourage teams to go
out and look for new fields that we can use to play on. For
more info read the article about field status elsewhere
in this post

************************************************************
Field Status:

We barely have enough fields right now to support our Monday
and Wednesday leagues and therefore growth on those nights
is very limited. At the same time some of the fields we
currently use are are not very good and over time get even
worse.

With the above in mind we are asking for any and all help
in finding new fields that we can use to schedule Ultimate
games on during the summer.

- If there is a field you know about let us know.
- Maybe you work for a company with lots of green space and
  could get us access.
- Maybe you just feel like wandering around looking for us.

We have also decided that if a team joins a division and
brings a new field that can be played on with them then:
- 1/2 of their games will be played on that field
- they will get a case of Sleeman's beer.
- the cost of the field will be paid by OCUA.
The only catch to this is that the field must first be
surveyed and approved by the OCUA board of directors.
This is also the only reason we will go above our imposed
cap of 72 teams per night. If new fields become available
then of course more teams will be able to play.

We also ask if:

- During April and the beginning of May if a field is very
wet please do not practice on it. That will quickly wreck
a field. Hold your team practices on non league fields if
  possible.

- We have decide to try and rest the 3 Riverside fields
specially. We may try to organise 2 fields there in a
different orientation than the regular 3 fields.

- We will be surveying the fields in the near future to see
if they are dry enough to play on. At the same time it may
become quickly apparent that some fields need some ice
storm branch clean up is necessary. If you feel like
volunteering to help pick up branches either pick a field
and just do it or let me know and I will let you know if
we have a field that needs cleaning.

New Competitive League:

Ottawa Gold and Ottawa Voodoo Lovedolls invite everyone, who
needs more ultimate in their lives, to be a part of a new
and exciting ultimate league! On Tuesday, April 28th at 6 pm
and Thursday, April 30th at 6 p.m. (weather permitting), the
inaugural season of the Men's Developmental Ultimate League
will kick off the summer with two days of pickup ultimate at
fields to be determined later. For the above dates, bring a
light, a dark and a red T-shirt. Following the pickup games,
the league will play every second Thursday. Each team will
consist of eager, young athletes and slow-footed, veteran
competitive players. If you fit into one of these categories,
this is the league for you. Play will focus on competitive/
tournament style offences and defences. If you wish to
improve your ultimate skills quickly and are thinking of
playing competitive ultimate in the future, this is your

Tuesday Masters League:

Calling all old farts and fartlets. Is anyone interested
in putting together masters teams to play on Tuesday nights?
The only rule is you must be over 30 to play. All other
facets will be determined by those involved. Play a more
experienced finesse game with a lower level of physical
punishment.

Call Nick Roberts at 729-9227 and we can talk.

************************************************************
Ottawa Gold Tryouts:

On Sunday, May 3rd at 1 pm and Tuesday, May 5th at 6 p.m.
(weather permitting), Ottawa Gold will be holding tryouts
for the 1998 season at fields to be determined later. For
both dates, bring a light, a dark and a red T-shirt. The
tryouts will consist of drills, scrimmages and the occasional
witty banter. We encourage everyone, who is interested in
seeing what competitive ultimate is all about, to come and
tryout.

As the team is looking to change it's name for the third
consecutive year, a spot on the team will be automatically
given to anyone who can think of a new name.

All captains should try to read the bylaws before the

be about.

try and give him or her a copy of the bylaws for them to
read ahead of time.
