OCUA Youth Coach
Purpose of Position: Help introduce youth players (9-13) to the sport of ultimate with primary emphasis on fun and secondary emphasis on learning and understanding the sport of ultimate.
Coaches should have a desire to work with youth, enjoy working with youth, and be interested in sharing the sport of ultimate with the next generation of athletes looking for fun, social sports and activities.
Functional Responsibilities/Job Description:
- Introduce youth ages 9-13 to the game of ultimate as a role model of the community, emphasizing the fun of the game.
- Provide structure, organization, and leadership to team and for all the players on the team.
- Lead the team in functional drills from coaching plan (available to coach volunteer with flexibility for input from coach) to introduce the key skills and understanding of ultimate while emphasizing fun.
- Teaching youth how to play through:
- Explanation and demonstration of rules;
- Integrating fun games and challenges to assist in skill development
- Work with the other volunteer coaches to maximize the fun potential and introduction to the game of ultimate through integrated practices and coached games.
Responsible To: Volunteer Services Officer; OCUA Staff
Qualifications:
- Interest in working with youth and experience with the age group of 9-13.
- Interest in the sport of ultimate and a desire to the sport grow by introducing it to young players in a fun and exciting way.
- The ability to motivate and teach youth to play the game in a safe and fun way.
- Have a willingness to learn about drills and methods to best teach the skills of ultimate to age group.
- Have a fundamental understanding of rules and the fundamental skills necessary to teach the game in a manner conducive to team aged 9-13.
- Be patient, understanding, and a good communicator when discussing issues and concerns with parents of players.
- Per activities involved with age groups in the vulnerable sector, coaches are required to complete a Criminal Reference Check.
Best Person For Position: Patient, fun, enthusiastic, and who is interested in working with youth.
Length of Commitment: The length of the season that the team plays; opportunities for coaches are available in 2 seasons of play.
- Summer; May-August (13 weeks)
- Fall; Mid September-October (6 weeks)
Time Commitment: Maximum time per week is 2 hours (additional time for preparation at the discretion of the coach)
THIS LEAGUE TAKES PLACE IN GEOGRAHPIC REGIONS ACROSS THE CITY (CENTRAL, EAST, WEST) AND TEAMS PLAY AT FIXED LOCATIONS FOR THE LENGTH OF THE SEASON

Benefits of Volunteering: Satisfaction of cultivating the interest in ultimate in the next generation of players and sharing the importance of the spirit and sportsmanship of ultimate. The importance of instilling important sporting and life values of character-building, integrity, etc.
Additional Comments:The youth program is very important in introducing youth to the sport of ultimate and contributing to the healthy development and sporting lives of NCR youth.
In addition the youth program serves as an opportunity for youth players to progress to the junior level starting at the age of 14. Players coming up in this way will be the next generation of players playing the game.
