ROSTER DEPOSIT CLARIFICATION
Okay, I know that many of you have been feeling a lot of
frustration with the roster submission system to date.
Believe me, it's been no picnic for me either. :) As soon as
we get around one problem, another one seems to pop up. We
continue to work the issues, and I had hoped that my piece in
Ultimate Happenings would help clarify things. Unfortunately,
it seems to have caused some more confusion, which I hope I
can straighten out here.
Many of you seem to be viewing the requirement that teams
provide a roster deposit despite the relatively
unavailability of the registration system as the institution
of a penalty. The $50 roster deposit is NOT a penalty - it is
essentially the same roster deposit we asked for at
registration last year, and for years before that. The caveat
of not having to provide a cheque if you already had 12
players registered was merely a matter of convenience for
everyone involved. It was an added bonus to make things
simpler for us all. Unfortunately, due to the problems
encountered, we are aware that most people will not be able
to take advantage of this perk.
In the end, however, all it should cost you is the paper your
cheque is written on, as the cheque is postdated to the
roster submission deadline - we're not asking for any
additional money up front. Yes, we realize that there have
been problems, and they are entirely our fault. We apologize
for that, and in recognition of that fact, we've pushed back
the roster deadline two weeks to May 28th, more than a month
away. This should give teams more than enough time to
register by the deadline, which means your cheque will be
ripped up, and you're out absolutely nothing. I don't think
that this is at all unfair.
Some people have asked why the rosters are so important,
anyway? Well, there are numerous reasons, but one of the
most important is the ability to know just how many members
we have. This information is crucial for sponsorship
opportunities, lobbying governments for fields, and to
generate interest from the media and other organizations.
Demographic data (which we will hopefully be soon collecting)
is another valuable part of that.
Other people have complained about the fact that we require
so much personal information. I can understand people's
privacy concerns, but we as an organization have always been
very adamant about not releasing any personal information,
and we have gone to great efforts to ensure that it is
secure. And the fact is, I strongly believe that we as an
organization have every right to know exactly who are members
are, and to be able to contact them. I don't think that it's
reasonable to expect to be able to join an organization in
anonymity. True, you could argue that one point of contact
(ie phone or email) would be sufficient. But that is simply
not reliable, and there are other bonuses obtained from the
additional information. Postal addresses give us another
means of contact, and help show us the geographical
distribution of our players. Birthdates help to uniquely
identify people, and give us the age distribution of our
players. All these things help us try to bring better
service to you the players. We're not big brother here,
ready to release your personal info on a whim, or hunt you
down for evil purposes. We're all OCUA, and we just want to
make the experience of being part of the organization better
for everyone.
So, back to the actual logistics of registration. Here's what
captain's will need for tomorrow:
1) A cheque for $550 made out to OCUA dated April 21.
2) A roster deposit cheque for $50 made out to OCUA dated May
28.
3) Cash to buy any discs/cones/apparel etc. that you
want/require
4) You WILL NOT need to have anything/anyone registered in
the database
Anyway, I hope this helps put the situation into better
perspective, and hopefully alleviates at least some of your
concerns. If you want to discuss it further, feel free to
contact me, or talk to me about it at registration tomorrow.
In the meantime, we will continue to try to improve the
registration system's performance to make life easier for all
of us. :)
Cheers!
