OCUA History
Ultimate is alive and well in Canada's capital! In fact, to the best of our knowledge,
Ottawa currently has the largest ultimate league in the world - as of 2004, we had
354 teams in our summer league and approximately 5000 members! The following
chart details the pattern of overall league growth since its inception in 1986:

Looking at the above numbers in terms of team format, we get the following
breakdown. Note the rapid rise in popularity of the 4/3 leagues since they
were first introduced in 1993, which ultimate lead to the demise of 5/2 in 2002.

Even more exciting is the fact that we have purchased 100 acres of land near Manotick Station, and have developed it into a new permanent field site to supplement our other field sites! For more information, please see the OCUA Land Purchase page. Your support is needed for numerous volunteer projects on this site.
In general, OCUA is a not for profit organization whose primary mandate is to organize and promote the growth of the sport of Ultimate in the Ottawa-Carleton region. We were incorporated in Canada in 1993, and operate under the provisions of our bylaws. Recent changes to these bylaws were voted in at the last general meeting on April 14, 1998, and have met Industry Canada approval. Information about the league's bylaws, rules, and other policies can be found on the [Bylaws and Policies] page.
The primary effect of the new bylaws was to create an elected [Organization Structure|Board Of Directors]. Up until this point, each team captain served as a member of the board, but as the league grew, this became far too unwieldy. The board consists of a far more manageable 9 members, and serves as the primary decision making body for the organization.
The operations of the organization are currently handled entirely by volunteers, and we're always looking for more. Day to day operations of the numerous ultimate leagues and divisions keep most of our volunteers busy, but covering basic league operations is not enough. We also have to address issues of development and change to push the organization and the sport forward. We have a number of committees currently in place to address some of these issues, and we are looking to establish more (most notably a Sponsorship/Fundraising Team). If you are interested in helping out on one of these committees, or would like to spearhead the formation of others, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator.
