  • For the past six weeks, OCUA has run its 8 2021-2022 Winter Adult Leagues. All 2021-2022 Winter Leagues require full vaccination for participation and additional health and safety protocols are in place to reduce risk. Unfortunately, the risks of COVID-19 cannot be completely eliminated and there were two instances regarding COVID-19 that have occurred in the past seven days.

Update on COVID-19 Restrictions impacting OCUA Winter Leagues

Today the Ontario Provincial Government issued restrictions closing all sports facilities across Ontario until at least Wednesday, January 26th, 2022. These restrictions mean that we have to hit pause on all OCUA leagues and programs until further notice.

In the coming weeks, OCUA will work on the restart plan and communicate with members when more information and details are available.

Thank you everyone for your continued encouragement and support through these evolving times. We are determined, optimistic and will be ready for a safe return to Winter Ultimate.

League & Program Update: Return to Play Paused

Dear OCUA Members,

As with the past 20 months, navigating the pandemic has required adjustment, adaptation and understanding. The OCUA leadership has been continually monitoring the evolving COVID19 situation, watching the Government of Ontario updates, reading bulletins and reviewing notices from Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health, and along with the surging case counts and infection rates.

While the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Provincial Government have not officially paused indoor sports, Dr. Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health has recommended that, “We reduce in-person contact and limit gathering sizes to slow the spread and allow more time for Ontarians to get fully vaccinated or those eligible to get their booster dose”. Furthermore, Ottawa Public Health’s (OPH) Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Vera Etches, issued a special statement on December 31, 2021, that recommends, “For the next few weeks, regardless of your vaccination status, pause or greatly limit the size of indoor gatherings with people outside of your household, including pausing participation in extracurricular indoor sports and team play.”

While OCUA announced yesterday that programming was set to resume beginning January 3rd, 2022, in light of the recent special statement from Dr. Etches, there is cause for reconsideration. We have also had a number of players, teams, parents and coaches inform us that they are not comfortable playing at this time.

Considering all the above, the OCUA Leadership has made the decision to delay the return to Winter Session 1 Leagues & Programs for at least one week to January.10.  In alignment with OPH, OCUA will continue to monitor the situation and communicate our restarting plan with all members weekly.

OCUA wants to thank all of you, our members, for trusting us to make Ultimate as safe as possible, and an extra big thanks to our captains, coaches and coordinators for their time and taking the brave steps back to make our Summer, Fall and Winter Session 1 seasons to date, fun and enjoyable.

We also encourage members, if you are eligible, to book your booster dose.

OCUA will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as appropriate.

Stay safe,
Britany Gordon
OCUA Executive Director

League & Program Update: Leagues Resume Jan. 3

Following the most recent Public Health guidelines and in alignment with facility regulations, OCUA Session 1 programming is set to resume January 3, 2022 (with the exception of leagues playing at Carleton University or U of Ottawa - check inbox for update on those leagues/programs).

The OCUA Return to Play Protocols have been updated to reflect the most recent Ontario and Ottawa Public Health guidelines; and have been done so in our best effort to keep OCUA members as safe as possible while they return to the game they love.

The latest version of the OCUA Return to Play protocols can be found here and on the COVID Resource Hub page.

Members are reminded that the collective safe and healthy resumption of our sport is a team effort - please do your part and follow the Return to Play protocols and Public Health Guidelines

League & Program Update

With the emergence of the new variant and with Public Health regulations and restrictions changing frequently, OCUA is taking the time to review how leagues and programs will proceed in the New Year and will update our membership in the coming weeks. This includes how recent changes will effect Winter Session 1 leagues, and the plans for Winter Session 2.  Currently, Session 1 leagues are set to end between the end of January and the first two weeks of February; and Session 2 will tentatively begin shortly thereafter (approx. Mid-February to early March). As of right now, pending there are no further changes to Public Health regulations for sport, OCUA plans to announce Session 2 league offerings the first week of January, and registration will open the second week of January.  This will give OCUA members a week to review which leagues are being offered before registration opens.  We wish you all a safe and happy holidays! We look forward to seeing you back on the fields in 2022!
